Building Infrastructure
Project Highlights
  • Design Build
  • New Construction
  • SF: 9,800
  • Cost: $3.7 million
  • Contract Type:  FFP
Client: Federal Bureau of Prisons

This Design Build project was conducted to provide a new Staff Training Center at the Mendota, California Federal Correctional Institute for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The building includes spaces for an assembly room, exercise room, offices, kitchen, restrooms, showers, locker room and general storage. It also includes a data and communication equipment room for the prison-wide emergency notification system and complete fire suppression facilities.

The training center is a fully conditioned metal building with insulated metal roof and wall panels and a standing seam metal roof on a concrete pad. It is approximately 1,000 yards from the prison and called for all site utilities (water, sewer, electrical, gas, and communications) to be extended to the building envelope. Connection to the municipal wastewater collection system required that a grinder and lift station also be installed. The site was originally part of a farm compound, so the project included demolition of the existing farm buildings, abandonment of the wells and removal or reconfiguration of the extensive irrigation system. The advanced irrigation systems controls were then reprogrammed to reflect the reconfigured system. This project was completed both on time and on budget.
